The Story Behind PetrolFinder
My name is Wayne and I'm from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I built PetrolFinder out of pure frustration.
Like most UK drivers, I was fed up with the feeling of being ripped off at the pump. Fuel prices vary wildly — sometimes by 15-20p per litre between stations just a few miles apart. Supermarkets undercut branded forecourts, motorway services charge a premium, and some stations quietly hike prices hoping nobody notices.
When the UK Government launched the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, requiring large retailers to report their prices publicly, I saw an opportunity. What if there was a site that took all that data and made it actually useful? Not just a government API, but a proper tool that tells you exactly where the cheapest fuel is, right now, near you.
So I built PetrolFinder. What started as a weekend project has grown into the UK's most comprehensive fuel price comparison platform, tracking over 7,500 petrol stations across England, Scotland, and Wales.

How Our Data Works
Government Mandate
Under The Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, all UK fuel retailers with 100+ stations must report prices to the CMA within 30 minutes of any change. This is the law — not voluntary.
We Sync Every 5 Minutes
Our automated pipeline pulls the latest data from the UK Government Fuel Finder API every 5 minutes. We process station info, prices, amenities, and opening hours — then store it all in our database for instant retrieval.
Smart Filtering
We don't just show raw data. Permanently closed stations are removed. Zombie stations (no update in 30+ days) are filtered out. Stale prices (7+ days) are demoted below fresh ones. Closed stations sort to the bottom. You only see reliable, actionable data.
Insights & Analysis
National Averages
We calculate live national averages for every fuel type across all active stations. See how your local prices compare to the UK average — are you paying more or less than the rest of the country?
Supermarket vs Branded
Our insights break down the price difference between supermarket forecourts (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons) and branded stations (Shell, BP, Esso). The gap is often 5-8p per litre.
Motorway Premium
We track the motorway premium — how much more you pay at motorway service stations versus regular forecourts. Spoiler: it's usually 15-25p per litre more. Always fill up before the motorway.
City Comparison
Prices vary significantly by location. Our city comparison shows which areas of the UK have the cheapest and most expensive fuel, updated in real-time.
Price History
Every station has a full price history chart going back 30 days. See when prices went up, when they dropped, and whether your local station is trending cheaper or more expensive.
Market Pulse
Our live Market Pulse feed shows how many stations updated prices today, which cities saw the biggest drops, and which stations made the largest price changes.

Fuel Types We Track
Standard unleaded petrol with up to 10% ethanol. Suitable for most cars from 2011 onwards.

Standard diesel fuel with up to 7% biodiesel blend. The most common diesel type in the UK.
Enhanced diesel with cleaning additives. Can improve engine performance and fuel economy.
Diesel with up to 10% biodiesel content. A greener alternative increasingly available at UK forecourts.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil — a fossil-free, drop-in diesel replacement made from renewable feedstocks.
Built on Open Data
PetrolFinder is powered entirely by publicly available data from the UK Government Fuel Finder API, operated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The site is not affiliated with any fuel retailer, supermarket, or oil company. We don't take advertising money from fuel brands, and our sort order is never influenced by commercial relationships. The cheapest station always appears first.
PetrolFinder is free to use and always will be. If you find it useful, share it with other drivers — that's the best way to support the project.
