Plan the Cheapest Fuel Stops on Your Journey
Long journeys can burn a hole in your wallet, especially if you end up filling up at a motorway service station where prices routinely sit 15-25p per litre above the national average. Our route planner takes a smarter approach: enter your start point and destination, and it scans every forecourt along your route to find the station that delivers the lowest total cost -- not just the cheapest headline price.
What makes this tool different is that it accounts for the real cost of a detour. A station that is 5p cheaper per litre but two miles off the motorway will burn extra fuel getting there and back. The planner factors in your vehicle's fuel economy, current tank level and the additional fuel consumed during any diversion, so the "best value stop" genuinely is the one that costs you least overall.
You can customise every detail -- vehicle type, tank capacity, current fuel level, and even the threshold at which you prefer to refuel. The route summary shows distance, duration, estimated arrival time and CO2 emissions for the journey, while a comparison against typical motorway prices reveals exactly how much you stand to save by planning ahead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the route planner find the cheapest fuel?
The planner plots your route and identifies every fuel station within a configurable distance of your path. It then calculates the total cost of stopping at each one, including the price per litre, the fuel needed to make the detour and the time added to your journey. The station with the lowest overall cost is recommended, with alternatives listed for comparison.
Does the route planner include motorway service stations?
Yes, all motorway services that report their prices are included. They often appear in the alternatives list so you can see exactly how much more they charge compared with stations just off the next junction. In most cases, leaving the motorway for a few minutes can save you several pounds per fill-up.
Can I plan multi-stop journeys?
The current planner supports a single origin and destination. For multi-stop trips, you can plan each leg separately and use the recent routes feature to quickly recall previous searches. We are working on multi-waypoint support for a future update so you can optimise fuel stops across an entire road trip.
