Methodology
Most Overpricedshows stations charging significantly above the current UK national average. Data is filtered to stations that have reported prices within the last 14 days via the UK Government's mandatory fuel price reporting scheme. Use the Motorway / Non-Motorway filter to separate MSA stations (which typically charge more due to location and operating costs) from local forecourts.
Biggest Price Hikescompares each station's current reported price against their price from 5–9 days ago using our price history database. Only stations with confirmed prices in both periods are included.
All data sourced from the UK Government's mandatory fuel price transparency scheme. Prices are reported by fuel retailers and PetrolFinder.uk does not independently verify them.
How the Price Watch Works
Every five minutes, we pull the latest prices from the UK Government's mandatory fuel price reporting scheme and compare each station against the current national average. Any forecourt charging five pence or more above that average gets flagged — it is as simple as that. We also track week-on-week price movements to spot stations that are actively hiking their prices while competitors hold steady or drop.
To keep the data fair and relevant, we apply a 14-day freshness window. Stations that have not reported a price in the last fortnight are excluded, so you are never looking at stale figures from a forecourt that may have closed or changed hands. Motorway service stations are separated from the main rankings because their pricing operates in a different league entirely — captive-audience economics mean they are almost always more expensive, and mixing them in would skew the picture for everyday driving.
The result is a transparent, near-real-time view of which forecourts are giving drivers a fair deal and which are quietly padding their margins. No opinions, no sponsorship — just the numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does PetrolFinder identify overpriced stations?
We calculate the national average price for each fuel type using all stations that have reported within the last 14 days. Any station charging five pence or more above that average is flagged as overpriced. We also compare against the local city average where enough data exists, so you can see whether a station is expensive for its area or simply in a pricier region. The threshold is deliberately set to catch genuinely excessive pricing rather than normal penny-or-two variations.
Why are motorway service stations more expensive?
Motorway forecourts operate under what economists call captive-audience pricing. Once you are on the motorway, your options are limited — you either pay the asking price or hope you can reach the next junction. The operators know this, and their rents from the likes of Moto, Welcome Break, and Extra are significantly higher than a typical high-street filling station. Those costs get passed on at the pump. We separate motorway stations in our rankings so they do not distort the picture for the vast majority of drivers filling up on ordinary roads.
How often is the price watch updated?
The price watch refreshes every five minutes. Data is sourced from the UK Government's mandatory fuel price reporting scheme under The Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, which requires all fuel retailers above a certain volume threshold to report their prices. This means you are seeing near-real-time information, not yesterday's numbers.
