Fuel Price Trends

UK fuel prices are influenced by a complex chain of factors that starts long before petrol reaches the pump. The single biggest driver is the global price of crude oil, which is traded in US dollars. That means the GBP/USD exchange rate plays an equally important role — when the pound weakens against the dollar, the cost of importing oil rises even if crude itself stays flat.

On top of the wholesale cost, every litre of fuel sold in the UK carries fuel duty (currently 52.95p per litre) plus VAT at 20% on the total price including duty. Together, tax typically accounts for around 50–55% of what you pay at the pump. The remaining margin goes to refiners, distributors, and retailers — and it is this retail margin where you see the biggest variation between brands and locations.

Regional price differences are largely driven by competition density and transport costs. Urban areas with many stations competing for trade tend to have lower prices, while rural and motorway forecourts often charge a significant premium. Seasonal patterns matter too — demand typically rises during summer holiday periods and around Christmas, which can push prices higher even when wholesale costs are stable.
